I apologize for my long absence from this blog. Many other things took priority, in the past year and I didn't find enough time to do these posts to the high standards I set for myself. Instead of a daily post, it will become a "whenever the mood strikes me" posting schedule. There may be a story attached to it. There may not be. Candle (Sick And Tired) - White Tie Affair

Apparently, this song has been all over the place lately. I haven't heard anything about it. At least nothing that I can remember. The music mostly sounds like the same emo crap that every other newer band is trying to pass off to the mass public today. There is one difference with this song though. The lyrics.
The lyrics deal with loss and pain and picking yourself up again. I can easily relate to that. I can also respect that they are trying to bring fun back to the genre. It doesn't hurt that they're from Chicago.
Even though this song is about lost love, I can relate it to the death of my uncle. I would have glossed over this song, for awhile anyway, if it wasn't for my cousin, which happens to be my deceased uncle's daughter. She usually leaves interesting snippets of lyrics on her Facebook page and one night she put the up the lyric, "I'd be lying if I told you, losing you was something I could handle".
After seeing that, I had to seek out the song. I was initially bored with the song because it sounded like a PANIC! At The Disco clone. The lyrics soon won me over and I can honestly say that I like it.

Discipline - Nine Inch Nails

For some odd reason, I unplugged my iPod and listened to the radio on April 22, 2008. I listened to the local alternative station to catch up on the new music. From time to time, I will listen to the radio and see what's getting airplay. I usually find one or two songs to plug into the iPod.
No sooner did I turn the radio on, when the DJ informed the listeners that a download had just arrived unannounced and they were going to play it on the air. The song was brand spankin' new Nine Inch Nails. I'm surprised that I didn't swerve because I was that excited.
Trent had just finished the song hours before and we were now listening to it without warning. Instantly, I knew that NIN was ready to take full advantage of the internet as a way to release instant music. I moved and grooved the best I could while driving.
When I found my way home, I scoured the web for a download. I found one rather quickly and into the iPod "Discipline" went. To me, the song sounded like a cross between "Only" and something off of the Downward Spiral. No matter what it could be compared to, it rocked.

Chinese Democracy - Guns N' Roses

Almost eighteen years after their last album of original material was released, the new Guns N' Roses album will finally see the light of day. Can almost two decades of buildup live up to the expectations? Well, no. Realistically, it can't. There is absolutely no way that this album will match or exceed the hype surrounding it.
So, let's remove the hype machine for a minute. What's left from the first single? A seriously kick butt rock song. It touches close on industrial and metal, while retaining the GNR flair. It's not the best song out there, but it's not bad. It reminds me of the heavier moments on Use Your Illusion.
My first impressions of the song made me think of the Smashing Pumpkins, but then the familiar Axl wail reared it's ugly head. It's nice to hear Axl use his lower range, like on some of the best album tracks on Appetite For Destruction. The music still reminds me of the heavier moments of Machina from the Smashing Pumpkins though.
Still, I will get a free can of Dr. Pepper out of this release. I foolishly prepaid for this album, years ago, at Musicland. I will never see that money again, but I will try to get it from the legal owner of the Musicland name, TransWorld Entertainment. Since the album will only be offered at Best Buy locations, I feel that I am entitled to a refund. I won't hold my breath over that.

The Day That Never Comes - Metallica

Metallica comes back with their boldest statement in years, but it's ultimately too late. There are great songs to be discovered on this album, but most of it is run of the mill Metallica. The focus seems to be on recapturing their older sound, which it does to a degree, but it never quite captures the same magic.
"The Day That Never Comes" is a decent song. It will be in my playlist from now on. It just lacks something that puts it over the top. The song starts off slow and ballad-like, like the Metallica of late. Then it degrades into an older style of Metallica. Thrashing guitars and poppy drums, which sound a little too tinny. The old growl of James Hetfield slowly creeps in toward then end, but it never fully emerges.
The beginning of the song is nothing special, but the last half of the song redeems it, in my eyes. My first taste of Metallica was the Ride The Lightning album. Despite what many think, Metallica has always gravitated towards the slow, melodic songs. The Kill 'Em All album would be the only album that doesn't really have a slower song.
The video for "The Day That Never Comes" is supposed to be a serious statement about the horrors of war. The video turns unintentionally funny in parts. A soldier drags a wounded soldier around like Linus drags around his blue blanket. The unharmed soldier also props up the wounded soldier against a military vehicle, only to see him slowly slump towards the ground and drool, when his attention is focused in another direction.
This song is not their best, but it certainly beats a lot of what's out there already.
