The Lumberjack Song - Monty Python

Artist: Monty Python
Song: The Lumberjack Song
Year: 1970
Album: Monty Python's Flying Circus

I'm always up for a good laugh and one of the best laughs that I can find is Monty Python. I guess it's the part of me that likes absurd thoughts. Still, there's something about a catchy, silly tune that I can't resist.

I suppose that it's all in the setup of the original sketch. I remember watching this sketch for the first time on the television show, Monty Python's Flying Circus. It featured a homicidal barber who wanted nothing more than to be a lumberjack. Of course, when the sketch turned to talk of lumberjacks, the whole thing turned 180 degrees.

This is as much a visual joke as it is an audible one. For one who has seen the sketch in numerous forms, I can see the disgusted looks on the lumberjack chorus. I can see the "best girl" by his side grow more disappointed with each line. It makes for a great all around treat.

There is something to pick out and enjoy for every age group. The silly sing song chorus can delight children, while the older crowd can snicker about the talk of a cross dressing lumberjack. I'm sure that they're out there and I wonder how they feel about this song. I feel hilarious whenever I hear this.

Lyrics:
I'm a lumberjack
And I'm ok
I sleep all night and I work all day
(He's a lumberjack
And he's ok
He sleeps all night and he works all day)

I cut down trees
I eat my lunch
I go to the lavatry'
On Wednesdays I go shopping
and have buttered scones for tea
(He cuts down trees
He eats his lunch
He goes to the lavatry'
On Wednesdays He goes shopping
and has buttered scones for tea
I cut down trees)

I'm a lumberjack
And I'm ok
I sleep all night and I work all day
I cut down trees
I skip and jump
I like to press wild flowers
I put on womens' clothing and hang around in bars
(He cuts down trees
He skips and jumps
He likes to press wild flowers
He puts on womens' clothing and hang around in bars?)

I'm a lumberjack
And I'm ok
I sleep all night and I work all day
I cut down trees
I wear high heels
Suspendies' and a bra
I wish I'd been a girly
Just like my dear pa-pa
(He cuts down trees
He wears high heels?)

(He's a lumberjack
And he's ok
He sleeps all night and he works all day
He sleeps all night and he works all day)
