I Turn My Camera On - Spoon

Artist: Spoon
Song: I Turn My Camera On
Year: 2005
Album: Gimme Fiction

This is one of those songs that gets in your head because of the thumping bassline. That is what makes the song instantly recognizable to me. I didn't know anything about Spoon or their major label struggles, but once I did, I admired the band even more.

The band must have gone through some dark times at the hands of Elektra Records. Being dropped from a major label only four months into a contract must be disheartening. Especially after the band was promised promotion that never came.

The band made the best of the situation by releasing a scathing concept single aimed at their former label and A&R man. The fact that Spoon stayed together long enough to score a radio hit is nothing less than remarkable. If they had called it quits after the Elektra debacle, then the world may have been robbed of this great song.

I can thank a local radio station, WXRT, for making me aware of this song. I have found a bunch of great songs that normally would pass me by, since I wasn't into the same scene that Spoon came from in 2005. The first time that I heard this song, I immediately stopped what I was doing to listen to it. That is the sign of a great song.

Lyrics:
I turn my camera on
I cut my fingers on the way
They way I'm slippin away
I turn my feelings off
Y'made me untouchable for life
And you wasn't polite

It hit me like a tom
You hit me like a tom
On on and on

When I turn my feelings on
I turn my feelings on inside
Feel like I'm gonna ignite
I saw them stars go off
I saw them stars go off at night
And they're looking alright

Keep on blowin up
Keep on blowin em off
Get up roll it out
Keep on showin em out

Y'hit me like a tom
It hit me like a tom
On and on a tom

I turn my camera on
I cut my fingers on the way
I feel me slippin away
I wipe my feelings off
Y'made me untouchable for life
And you wasn't polite

Y'hit me like a tom
I don't know where it's from
It hit me like a tom-tom

Here comes the flan
