This song will most likely be played at my wedding. The version from the EP Space Cakes will be the version. The Jagged Little Pill version is a little too loud and disruptive for the mood that I'll be trying to capture. The first acoustic version sets the perfect tone.
Many people still don't realize the power of certain lyrics. There's a line in "Head Over Feet" that mentions best friend with benefits. Well, I took that as one meaning when this song came out. Over the years, I have learned that the view that I took on that line was a bit narrow. With age, I now take that to mean that my wife will be my best friend and someone I can share every aspect of my life with.
Gone are the angst filled lyrics that originally fueled this release. Time has a funny way of softening the edges. They now appear more heartfelt and meaningful, as lyrics. I suppose the mark of a good lyric is one that's open to many different interpretations. Each one being right.
This song brings me back to my late teens and early twenties. While the song has not changed in over a decade, my perspective on it has. The song has grown up with me. We have both come out of the experience a little worn, but better for the ride. We have matured.
